New murals rising at Denver’s biggest street art festival

The Crush is a week-long celebration of street art. The festival aims to bring art out of the gallery and into the streets. A collaborative effort with the River North Art District (RiNo), the Crush established a new definition of what art can mean in Denver, how people experience art, and how artists connect with the public. The Crush is the city’s largest independent street art festival. Founded by Denver Graffiti Artist, Dread, the Crush has been taking over the streets of RiNo since 2009. With a love for street and graffiti art as well as his community, Dread wanted to create an event that capitalized on the amazing artistic talents he saw not only in Denver but also across the world.

In 2016, the Crush was incorporated into the RiNo Art District organization in order to help the event grown. The RiNo Art District defines itself as a community where “art is made” and celebrates the craft of street artists who bring life to Denver’s walls. Continuing to transform streets and alleys into open-air galleries allows the neighborhood to attract positive attention and local businesses by adding character to store fronts and surrounding walls with colorful, creative murals. The Crush team believes that public art is a catalyst for safety, cleanliness, curb-appeal, creativity, growth, business interest, and investment while maintaining the unique cultural identity in this rapidly evolving community.

With artists painting, activities for visitors, special promotions throughout the neighbourhood, and parties, there is something for everyone at RiNo's signature street art festival. Crush artists hail from all corners of the globe. With internationally renowned street artists, local newcomers, and everything in between, the diversity and talent of these artists is unmatched. Each year, the Crush takes over the RiNo neighbourhood, transforming the area into a canvas like no other. Some walls are being repainted while others are a blank slate, ready to welcome a beautiful new mural into the neighbourhood.

The 2016 Crush is a free public event that will take place from September 12 until September 18. The event’s murals can be seen throughout RiNo and Denver as a testament to the dedication of the artists and the community. Each year’s event adds to the world-renowned collection of street art that the area has become known for and continues to grow.
