The Biennale of Illustration and Graphic Art

Graphic design experiments, garish striking colour compositions as well as subtle collages together produce a coherent picture of the stylistic variety in illustration that will be presented at this year’s Illustrative 16 at the Direktorenhaus in Berlin. The Biennial of Illustration and Graphic Art is showcasing the works of 32 appreciated illustrators and graphics from different countries. Again, the artists prove that illustration is able to reinvent itself time and again, despite the short-lived nature of most artistic content in the digital era.

Since its beginnings in 2006, Illustrative has established its position as the one of world’s most important platform for the genre. The board of trustees at Direktorenhaus, where the annual fair is held, has set up a remarkable collection of illustration art over the past 10 years, thus turning the festival into a museum-quality show. Each edition also presents new artists and their unique works of illustrative and graphic art.

Some years ago, free art and illustration have been contradictions - but not in former times. In the Bauhaus era, artists like Lyonel Feininger oscillated between the two creative worlds of art and craft. This year’s fair aims to highlight the connection between illustration and artistic avant-garde. It is for this reason that the Illustrative 16 presents an innovation, a single historic exhibition, dedicated solely to the works of nineteenth-century comic art pioneer Isabelle Émilie de Tessier, commonly known under her pseudonym Marie Duval.

The exhibition takes place in Berlin - hometown of Illustrative and conglomerate of artists from all over the world. During 10 days of Illustrative 16, Direktorenhaus will welcome artists, collectors, gallerists, visitors and agencies discovering new trends and young talents, exchanging opinions and admiring the unique art of illustration.
