Artists Films à la carte

In spring the Bavarian capital is once again focusing on contemporary media art. The now second edition of the festival CINEMA OF ART takes place in Munich from the 22end to 26th of April 2015 according to the slogan 'Science & Fiction'. Issues are the latest techniques of narration in films of visual art, which show how technical inventions and concepts of contemporary art dominate the commercial media industry today, from cinema to Internet and games.

But the festival is not limited to film screenings and artistic video installations. The program especially convinces with its diversity; Panel discussions, lectures, gallery exhibitions and a highly remunerated international competition with current art films from around the world complete the program. Within the international competition, a jury of curators and artists will award two grand prizes - each worth 10,000 euro – as well as another prize for artists younger than 35 years.

Other highlights include a tribute to the artist and filmmaker Harun Farocki in the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts who has died in 2014. As well as exhibitions at the National Museum of Egyptian Art, at the Museum Brandhorst, at the Pinakothek der Moderne, at the Goetz Collection and the Espace Louis Vuitton. Since February the Pinakothek der Moderne and the Museum Brandhorst have presented ‘Creating Realities - encounters between art and cinema’, the so far largest exhibition of the Bavarian State Collection of Paintings about film and video art.

The event CINEMA OF ART is likewise an exhibition series and a film festival and also serves as an international meeting place for artists, curators and audiences. Mainly presented are Movies by visual artists who rethink the popular cinema concept and therefore show creative alternatives to visitors.
