TENT MEETS TATE

Unique collaboration between youth and artists

This summer, TENT (contemporary art museum, Rotterdam) and Tate Gallery (museum for modern art, London) will be starting a unique teamwork project as part of an exchange program experiment for youth and artists. Eight young people from London and Rotterdam will collaborate with four artists from the respective cities. An artwork, performance or presentation will be prepared collectively in the process of an intensive program. The fruits of this collaboration will be exhibited in TENT and Tate Modern.

An international team will be formed, consisting of Charl Landvreugd of Rotterdam and fashion designer Marga Weimans who will be joining eight youths and two Londoner artists Bafic and Yemi Awosile. The group will spend five days in TENT working towards the development of a concept for an artwork, performance or presentation. The form and content will be devised in an intensive program comprising workshops, discussions, and studio visits to Jeanne van Heeswijk, artist from Rotterdam, for example.

The exchange program allows youngsters and artists to work together on a project built on the foundation of underrepresented and interdisciplinary genres of visual culture. The program explores new models for collaboration, where all participants have an equal artistic voice. Participants should be able to exchange knowledge whilst inspiring and challenging each other.

The collaboration with Tate Modern is part of On The Other Side Of Reality, the project in which TENT explores many platforms in the search for new ways of opening up the contemporary art to social, creative and cultural elements. The collaboration with the so-called “Summer Carnival in Rotterdam” is at the heart of the program. This year, TENT will be joining “Kunsthal” and the Curaçao Instituto Buena Bista (IBB) run by David Bade and Tirzo Martha for the street parade on Saturday 30 July. During the IBB Summer School, artists Mette Sterre and Klaar van der Lippe & Bart Stuart will be working together with the young participants on the creation of costumes and Carnival floats in the “Kunsthal”.
