MONS- THE PASSENGER DEPARTS

The Belgian conceptual artist Arne Quinze is known for his installations in public space. For the European Capital of Culture Mons in Belgium, the artist designed the wooden sculpture The Passenger. It was supposed be the largest installation of Mons in 2015. An 85 meter long and 16 meter high "forest" of red, white, black and brown wood molding boards should have span the Rue de Nimy between the Church of St. Elizabeth and the Maison Losseau for five years.

But it came different. The installation fell together in parts on Christmas Eve. It was a small Christmas miracle that no one was injured by the falling wood planks. Qunize is an old hand in terms of building monumental open-air installations, and never before that has one of his structure collapsed. In 2008, he already built similar installations "THE SEQUENCE" in front of the Flemish Parliament and "THE TRAVELLER" in the center of Munich. Was it material weakness in Mons? Was the static miscalculated? Is an accident or vandalism to be expected? Official investigations should quickly clarify the cause for the collapse of the wooden forest.

Quinze and the organizers in Mons could saw no way of repairing the damage and therefore no other way than completely disassembled the installation. The risk is too big that other parts of the structure relent and cause further damage. The Passenger was a unique symbol of metamorphosis, which Mons was passing in the context of its nomination as European Capital of Culture.
