Far East as a guest along Rhine and Ruhr

The Somme 2015 starts in nine museums along the Rhine and Ruhr under the motto "China", because 120 Chinese artists present contemporary positions of Far Eastern art. In many minds "Made in China" still stands for poor quality and counterfeit products, but with this prejudice the exhibition CHINA 8 cleans up once and for all. Contemporary art from Asia is versatile, modern, varied and creative. The show, which takes part in nine museums in eight cities, is the so far biggest museum inventory of contemporary Chinese art in the world and invites you to be a part of the cultural dialogue between China and Germany.

In each case the nine exhibitions are aimed according to the priorities and the content orientations of the museums. So the Osthaus Museum in Hagen shows installations and Applied Arts, where the Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg lets the sculptures speak and the Art museum Mülheim an der Ruhr irritates with installations and young art. Fans of the young and critical painting are right at the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen, whereas lovers of ink painting and calligraphy get their money worth at the Art museum Gelsenkirchen and friends of established painting are at home in the MKM in Duisburg. The show at the Museum Folkwang in Essen provides an overview of the current Chinese photography scene and the Sculpture Museum Glaskasten in Marl shows movies and videos of Chinese media artists. Visitors can get an overview of the various positions and artistic disciplines in the NRW-Forum Dusseldorf.

CHINA 8 is under the patronage of the Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister of Economics and Energy, Sigmar Gabriel, who will open the exhibition series on 13 May during a central ceremony in the MKM Museum Küppersmühle of Modern Art in Duisburg. In advance he declared: "The young art from China has greatly enriched the international art scene and made it more colorful. Of this you can convince yourself when visiting the exhibition CHINA 8. It's a great idea, to present contemporary works from China in eight cities and nine museums along the Rhine and Ruhr at the same time. The concept reflects the diversity of contemporary art and provides the different disciplines, whether painting, photography or sculpture in an appropriate space ".

The exhibitions will take place until September 13th 2015 and will be accompanied by numerous events, artist talks, workshops, tours and events.
