GLOSSARY OF STREETART

Terms and expressions of urban art (part 1)

Adbusting

Adbusting can be considered as a form of street art. These are mostly design changes that are made at advertising posters in public places and express criticism on political conditions or on the consumer society. The advertising is thereby alienated or glued over with logos or lettering to convey certain messages to the public.

Graffiti

There are many different types of Graffiti, which overlap in some parts, but generally are distinguished by the fact that they are neither images, logos nor characters. They are mounted on surfaces in public places - using different techniques – often through the use of spray cans.

Gang graffiti

Gang graffiti dates back to the thirties of the 20th century in the United States. Today Los Angeles is considered as one of the main places of this form of graffiti. In the Gang graffiti tags are used for a specific marking of the district of a gang. In contrast to the Style-Writing here less emphasis is placed on aesthetics as well as complicated configuration and multiple colors in the work.

Mural

Murals, also known as Concept Walls, are complex, large-scale Wall paintings of street art artists that are usually attached to a single large house facade. This is an artistically demanding, multicolored image on a specific topic, in which the social aspect is often in the foreground. These facade artworks represent the largest and most striking form of expression in the street art.

Stencil Art

The so called Stencil art or templates art requires in contrast to the freehand graffiti stencils of cardboard or plastic for the production of the subject. Through the pre-built template the color is then applied using spray or brushes. The advantage is that in this manner the subject can be performed at frequent repetitions. Blek Le Rat is considered as one of the founders.
