NEW ART MUSEUM IN WEST BANK

Opening of the Palestinian Museum

The Palestinian museum in Birzeit, West Bank, has officially opened its doors on 18 May 2016. The inauguration was celebrated with an impressive light show, classical music and a large number of visitors as well as Palestinian artists.

The construction of the new museum began in April 2014. The tense situation in the region didn’t make it easy for the persons responsible for the new museum.  Despite the escalating Gaza conflict since 8 July 2014 and the constant clashes between the Israeli military and the radical Islamic Hamas, the new Palestinian Museum in Birzeit (a little university town north of Ramallah) continued construction.

It was worth the wait: The construction of the museum dedicated to the history and culture of Palestine is now accomplished. The architecture of the massive concrete building was inspired by the cascading terraces of the local landscape of Birzeit. Irish architect Heneghan Peng, was chosen to design the museum after winning an international competition. The building comprises 2,500 square meters of exhibition space surrounded by a garden at least as great. At the opening, the exhibition rooms were still empty, but the visitors were invited to see the impressive building and the spacious garden.

The collection of the museum concentrates on objects and historical documents that date from the 19th century to the present. The focus is on important questions about modern Palestine, such as the Palestinian identity or the relationship of the Palestinians to their own country.

The opening exhibition is only expected to be presented in autumn 2016. The exhibition plans and the Executive Director have been changed. Since the beginning of this year, Mahmoud Hawari has been the new Executive Director of the museum. He is the former curator of the British museum in London and an expert in Islamic art. Mahmoud Hawari wanted to create a room for new and modern Palestinian art, but the museum sponsors disagreed. The former director had planned the exhibition “Never Part” for 2016 but it was canceled in March. The museum remains empty.
