New art project by Christo in Northern Italy

Christo and his wife Jeanne-Claude are mostly known for covering buildings and different objects in nature. Especially covering the Reichstag in Berlin in 1995 has attracted the attention of a whole nation. Almost 25 years of preparation were necessary for the giant and shiny silver fabric. The artist couple also alienated landscapes with their art. They covered about 178 trees at the Park of the Fondation Beyeler in Basel in 1998. The “Wrapped Trees” at the park of the Swiss art museum were shrouded in black and white polyester mesh.

The 80-year-old artist’s new project is no less ambitious than the projects he did in the past with his wife who passed away in 2009. The Bulgarian artist is going to transform the Lake Iseo in Northern Italy in a kilometer-long walk-in sculpture of luminous golden floating piers.

The piers are 16 meters wide are made of floating plastic cubes which are screwed together and covered with a special glittering, dahlia-yellow fabric fashioned from tightly woven nylon. They shall connect Sulzano, the island Monte Isola, and the small island San Paolo. “The textile shimmers in gold and early in the morning, depending on the sunlight exposure it will almost turn dark red or deep orange,” says the artist.  The landscape with the surrounding mountains and picturesque villages on the shore of the sea is particularly well suited for his installation.

The idea of the walk-in sculpture on the water is already several years old. It is not always easy to get permission for such big projects in public space which impact on nature. The artist’s dream has now become true. The visitors will be able to walk on the water – preferably barefoot so that one can appreciate the feeling of walking on a waterbed.

As well as his other projects “Floating Piers”, as a temporary installation, represent a transient spectacle. The show ends on June 3, the materials will then be removed and recycled. Photos will be the only thing that will remain of the sculpture on Lake Iseo.

“The Floating Piers” can be experienced from 18 June to 3 July at Lake Iseo, Italy.
