The globally unique award for digital art

Following five successful contests, The Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (ZKM) will be celebrating its sixth AppArtAward anniversary this year together with industry and science partners.

The AppArtAward honors Apps that epitomize advanced artistic applications. In the process of nominating a winner, esthetic and creative aspects play a pivotal role. Furthermore, the use of options obtainable from new technologies is essential.

In 2015, prize winners were awarded in following four categories: Prize for Artistic Innovation, Special Prize for Crowd Art, Special Prize for Sound Art, and Special Prize for Game Art. The latter was awarded to the Jump and Run App “Sometimes You Die” developed by Philipp Stollenmayer, which offers infinite gaming fun, in contrast to typical games, with its unlimited amount of levels.

This year, ZKM and CyberForum and their partners are once again looking for the best art works in App format. The Prize for Artistic Innovation, which can be awarded to all innovative and creative Apps, is the one category that has remained over the years.   The other four categories that have been set are completely new. The Special Prize for Connected Art will be dedicated to the App with the best ideas and solutions that support people in their daily lives, such as the so-called Wearables: fitness trackers, smartwatches or smartglasses.

The Special Prize for Virtual Reality focuses on the interactions and artistic design of a virtual room, with emphasis on VR glasses for smartphones. The AppArtAward for Art + Experience asks artists to provide first answers to how we will minimize the gap between the physical and virtual world, and how this could impact people.

The final category is Special Prize for Sharing. The focus is not on art but on the principle of the sharing economy. The goal is to promote and implement fascinating ideas relating to the sharing economy, using modern information and communication technologies.

The winner of each category will enjoy the awarded sum of 10.000 Euro. The award ceremony will take place on 15.07.2016 at 20:00 in Karlsruhe.
