TEHERAN ART COLLECTION IN BERLIN

Will the exhibition be cancelled?

The formal opening of the exhibition of the grand Teheran art collection was planned for December 4, 2016. As the opening day approaches, there has been increasing criticism and are more and more signs that the exhibition might be cancelled last minute.

The extensive art collection of Persian empress Farah Diba accounts from the reign of her late husband, Shah Reza Pahlavi and is considered one of the most precious collections of contemporary art in the world. Next Sunday, December 4, the exhibition housed at the Teheran Museum of Contemporary Art, was going to be exhibited in a foreign country for the first time.

The plan to bring the famous collection to Berlin had been celebrated in the art world at the beginning, German minister for Cultural Affairs, Monika Grütters said that this was 'a strong political and cultural message'. Now it seems that the exhibition has become a political issue itself. Various Iranian artists whose works will be shown in Berlin, now openly criticize the project, saying that they feel excluded from a process that is dominated wholly by the Islamic government of Iran. To make things worse, the Iranian government has still not issued the export licenses for the precious artworks.

All of this has lead to speculation throughout the art world, whether the exhibition will be cancelled completely. Acording to a press release, the event has already been postponed weeks ago, without setting a new date for the opening. Anyhow, if the exhibition will be shown after all, art lovers can look forward to enjoying some rare original paintings by great artists like Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Mark Rothko und Francis Bacon among others.
