GEORGIA O'KEEFFE

Largest Exhibition Ever Shown Outside the USA

In cooperation with the Tate Modern in London and the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, the Bank of Austria Kunstforum in Vienna presents the largest O’Keeffe exhibition ever shown outside the United States. The opportunities to see O’Keeffe in Europe are rare: her paintings are distributed around the leading US collections, where they have gained an iconic status. With a total of 85 works as well as 60 photographs from over 50 private collectors and museums, this retrospective now provides a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to discover the complete oeuvre of an exceptional artist.

The exhibition starts off with her lesser known early work, with its close affinity to Wassily Kandinsky’s spiritual abstraction, embracing the idea of synaesthesia by "translating music into something visual". In an artistic circle dominated by men surrounding her later husband, the photographer Alfred Stieglitz, she was one of the first female artists to be actively involved in shaping American Modernism. As a member of the National Women’s Party, she promoted Women’s rights, but always refused the essentialist and sexualized interpretation of her art, for example by Stieglitz, who described her artworks as the embodiment of 'the female'.

O’Keeffe’s monumental flower pictures of the 1920s are among her most popular subjects. Her almost abstract late landscapes inspired by the bleak, endless desert of New Mexico embody the creation of 'The Great American Thing', a specific American art, and anticipate the art trends of Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism. The exhibition accentuates O’Keeffe’s singular position, assumed through her bridge-building between European Modernism and American post-war abstraction, also through her constant mediation between a relationship with nature and abstraction, between organic and geometric, feeling and de-personalisation.
