Modern Sensuousness on the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are worth a visit even for people interested in art. This applies especially for the three greater Atlantic islands Tenerife, Lanzarote and Grand Canary. In Las Palmas, capital of Gran Canaria, Néstor Martín-Fernández de la Torre, short Néstor, was born (February 7, 1887 to February 6, 1938).

Néstor is known as the most important painter of the Canary Islands. At the tender age of 15 he leaves his country and moves to Madrid to study painting at the art academy. He hones his Jugendstil-technique in Paris, Gent, London and on long journeys through Europe and South America. In the 1930s, Néstor returns to Las Palmas.

Together with his brother Miguel he designed the architectural park "Pueblo Canario" (engl. the Canary village). With this idea, Néstor wants to revive the culture of the Canary Islands. After his early death, it is thanks to his brother that his idea becomes reality.

Since the 1950s the architectural park houses the "Museo Néstor", which is dedicated to the oeuvre of Néstor and shows his most important paintings but also works in the fields of theater, decoration and design.

In the ten halls of the museum visitors can find portraits, landscapes, handcrafts, drafts, drawings, theatre sceneries and architectural designs. The museum also includes the picture cycles "Poema del Mar" (1913-1924) and "Poema de la Tierra" (1934-1938). The homoerotic sensual pictures are considered as Néstor’s major works. befause of his early death, numerous of his artworks are incomplete.
