Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya im Palau National

1000 years of catalan-spanish Art

The national museum of Catalunya at Palau National is allegory for pride for many catalan people, for their history and the early independence. This historic building sits on the bottom of Montjuci, the home mountain of Barcelona. It was opened to world display 1929. With over 260.000 pieces of art this museum is probably one of the biggest and most important museums of Barcelona. The Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña also known as MNAC was founded in 1990 when a new law said that the art collections of Museu d’Art de Catalunya and the Museu d’Art Modern were supposed to be merged together. 1000 years of Spanish-catalan art history were combined.

So this huge building gives home to not only a big collection of art of the medieval times on the first floor but also an extensive collection of modern art. A walk through the around 40 rooms is a travel in time through the different flows of catalan art in the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century: Neoclassicism to Realism and the modern day up to the Avantgarde.   Within you will find some pieces by Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró.

The architecture of this building is amazing, especially the dome on the first floor and the enormous ball room which can fit 20.000 visitors. This was the opening place for the world exhibition in 1929.  The upsurge to MNAC can be managed over escalators with a beautiful view over the metropole of Barcelona.

From July 7th to October 14th you will find a special exhibition “Gala Dali”. An exhibition about the muse and wife of the well-known spanish surrealist .
