The unknown collection

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) walked through all highs and lows in life. Self-confidence up to the  narcissistic need for admiration made him restless within his work mania. In 2018 the 80th year of the death of the artist the graphic collection of “Staatsgalerie Stuttgart” presents a big treasure of 82 drawings, as well as 84 prints and 11 illustrated books by Kirchner who helped founding the art community “Brücke”.

All of his important topics such as Big Cities and dance, Landscape of  Fehrmarn and the Alps are represented in this amazing stock. Especially Kirchner’s print is exceptional, since you seldomly have single pieces of paper as a collections not just in single handmade prints.

Together with the the exhibiton of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner the “Staatgalerie Stuttgart” displays several more artist of “Die Brücke” such as Fritz Bleyl, Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Emil Nolde, Max Pechstein and Otto Mueller with their drawings, woodcuttings and lithographics from the rich stock of the graphic collection.

The Collection Dr. Gervais, Zurich/Lyon

The last time Kirchner’s pieces were shown in this extent was 1980. After now 38 years the museum presents the whole stock adding additional items on loan out of private collections.

All of the in 1920s purchased prints of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner were “anti-arted” in 1937. They were confiscated, so the rebuilt of the Kirchner collection could only start again after the second world war. One of these pieces was a collection of 143 drawings and prints purchased in 1957.

The exhibition focuses on the unknown part of this important collection to fuel fascination and sensuality which was laid into the art by Kirchner.
