First retrospective on Liu Xiaodong world wide

The Chinese painter and photographer Liu Xiaodong likes to get to know his protagonists before he portrays them. He spends time with them during their every day life. He tries to avoid cliché's and prejudice through his open approach. Paintings, as well as Photographs, diary excerpts and movie sequences originated during his travels through Tibet, Thailand Japan Nepal, Italy, Great Britain, Iceland, Greenland and Cuba. Liu deals artistically as a protagonist of a concrete realism with minorities all over the world. A double exhibition of “Slow homecoming” is happening at the “Kunsthalle Dusseldorf” and at the “NRW-Forum” as a world premiere.

Liu Xiaodong is one of the most known representatives of the contemporary art in China. His works offends the government in Beijing from time to time. This is caused by the unrestricted variety radiating from his works and his subtle criticism of society. Liu holds up a mirror to the explosive changes in China and shows the loser of the rapid social changes. In 1989 Liu was part of the student demonstration on the Tianamen Square in Beijing and lost through the abolition many friends. Liu exhibits his works same as his fellow countryman the famous Ai Weiwei mainly in the West.

In Dusseldorf he presents the portraits which are telling the stories of his travels. The huge oil painting “Qing Zang Eisenbahn” (2007) at the function room at the “Kunsthalle” shows two men dressed in dark clothes leading two horses through the veld in front of a mountain scenery. In the background you can see a tiny train. It is a cenotaph against the banishment of minorities caused by the constructions for the new train from Tibet to Lhasa. With his painting “Under the cherry blossoms” which shows eight respectable man standing around a woman covered with food Liu refers to Manets “Breakfast outside”. His works are a mixture of western stiles. Even the people in the pictures are dressed in a western world way, only their faces show that they are from Asia.

The exhibition “Liu Xiaodong slow homecoming” runs until August 19th at the “Kunsthalle Dusseldorf” and at the “NRW-Forum” in Ehrenhof Dusseldorf. At the “Kunsthalle” you will have an overview over his paintings with 40 large-sized paintings. At the “Forum” the focus lays on his photography and his digital art.
