Galerie Berlin-Baku GmbH

Creativity does not stop at national borders

Galerie Berlin-Baku is a partner gallery of QGallery in Baku, Azerbaijan. The gallery has been founded in district Schöneberg the Berlin in 2007 and is located right across the street to legendary “Großgörschenstr. 35,” which used to be a “self-help gallery” of artist from Berlin between 1964 and 1968 and is named after its address. It is considered to be one of the first artist run galleries and has as such model character.

The focus of the gallery is on the exchange between Azerbaijan and Germany. But not only artists from the above mentioned countries find their artistic home at the Galerie Berlin-Baku. Aesthetic creativity does not stop at national borders. On the contrary, it connects people besides all sorts of obstacles, it not only abolish political boundaries or making them at least translucent, but also cultural and economic.

Thus, the gallery has opened up to the presentation of paintings, sculptures, photographs and performances of various artists of different nationalities.

Focus of the gallery’s work lies in the field of Fine Arts, particularly contemporary art, but in the broadest possible sense. But Galerie Berlin-Baku’s activities go beyond visual arts, as they also offer literary evenings and film screenings.

Promotion for up and coming artists

Further the Galerie Berlin-Baku gets involved with the art education meaning apprenticeship for young upcoming artists, artist-student exchange programs are taking place. For example since 2008 Galerie Berlin-Bauk in co-operation with the German Embassy in Baku, the Academy of Arts in Baku and the partner gallery QGallery every year invites three students of the Academy of Arts from Azerbaijan to Berlin in order to give them the opportunity to get inspired of Berlin, its museums, studios and galleries. Conversely, Berlin-based artists visit Baku and pass on their skills and knowledge to master classes’ students in courses at the Academy of Arts in Baku.

The artistic expression and reception of art works, independent of time and space, belongs to the basic needs of mankind. Therefore, in or opinion, the exchange of artwork and the dialogue of people engaged in the culture sector are an excellent means of international understanding, the consolidation of peace, mutual recognition and interpersonal community.

The Berlin-Baku Gallery is a member of the Association of Berlin galleries.
