AppArtAward

The worldwide only prize for Digital Art

The "app" started its triumphal march on the 10th of July in 2008 with the introduction of the Apple App Store. Only three months later the media giant Google followed with its Play Store. Today, these two platforms maintain with over a million mobile applications, each, as the most successful in the market. Although countless Apps are dealing with art, or are digital artworks or have been developed by institutions of the international art market, there is currently no category "Art“ in none of the 70 existing app stores.

In order to give justice to the app as an art form and to establish these as a contemporary artistic medium, the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Technology and their partner CyberForum e.V. award an App Art with the AppArtAward for the best works of art within the digital App-format. The unique art prize draws 40,000 EURO in four categories. With the AppArtAward apps are honored, that claim or represent an artistic work of art in itself and combine current trends with the latest technical development. Thereby both aesthetic and creative aspects play an important role, but also the usability will be evaluated.

Already the first award ceremony in 2011 was a great success, because at the premiere of the AppArtAwards 90 contributions from 14 countries were submitted. The Berlin-based software developer and media artist Ivo Wessel dedicated a mobile application to the Arts Award in that year which will introduce in the artists and their works.

This year, app artists can apply in four different categories: the "Artistic Innovation Award" is aimed to all innovative and creative applications that know how to use the entire range of the medium. In the "Special Award for Sound Art" all those contributions are in focus that translated tones and sounds into the digital format. The "Special Award for Art Crowd" is aimed to apps that rely on Clouds, collective creativity and communities. As the final category the "Special Prize for Game Art" is awarded.

The application deadline for app developers, app-artist and media artists from all over the world is approaching fast. Until May 10th all applications have to be in Karlsruhe. The winners will be announced exactly two months later. On July 10th the award ceremony will take place in the ZKM_Medientheater, but will also be transmitted via live stream on the website of AppArtAwards.
