2015 – SPECIAL REVIEW OF THE YEAR’S EVENTS

Important Cultural Anniversaries in 2015

The year 2015 was also a year of some important anniversaries, which were celebrated by the international art world with a number of exhibitions and cultural events.

In 1815, the foundation was laid for the construction of one of the oldest museums in Germany: Städel Museum in Frankfurt on the Main. On the occasion of its 200th anniversary the exhibition house which is known far beyond the borders of Germany hosted a large special exhibition called “Monet and the birth of Impressionism”. It was dedicated to the great French painter, who was one of the most important representatives of Impressionist painting.

Louvre Museum celebrated a repdigit anniversary this year. The famous Parisian exhibition house was opened 222 years ago, on 10th August 1793 – a significant year for France, as it saw the demise of French monarchy. The Louvre, which is located in the former French royal palace, is not only one of the largest museums of the world, but also the art museum with the most visitors. Every year, approximately 8.8 million people visit the French capital city in order to take in the famous collection of the Louvre, which comprises ancient Greek and Roman works, works from the Italian Renaissance, works by Flemish painters from the 16th and 17th century and by French painters from the 15th until the 19th century.

2015 also saw the anniversary of the most important global exhibition of contemporary art. The documenta in Kassel, Hesse, presents the latest developments in contemporary art every five years, and was established 60 years ago. It was the 13th edition of this gigantic art event already. The city of Kassel celebrated the anniversary with a festival week with exhibitions, symposia and concerts. An exhibition which takes a look back at the past 13 documenta exhibitions can be seen at the Stadtmuseum Kassel until 15th February 2016.

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary as UNESCO World Heritage cultural site of its historic city center, the city of Macau hosted many cultural activities and exhibitions. The historic city center is characterized by an extraordinary juxtaposition of Buddhist pavilions, temples and Christian church architecture and was granted world heritage status in 2005. An exhibition in the St. Paul Cathedral gave an impression of the efforts the city has taken over the last years in order to preserve the cultural heritage of the city center and at the same time it emphasized the uniqueness of the historic monuments.

We look forward to the year 2016, which will again see some important anniversaries, and of course we will report on them.
